Elsa Nilsson Quartet

Genre: Jazz , Rock

Elsa Nilsson's music is profoundly playful and widely influenced, drawing from traditional Swedish folkmusic, jazz, rock and brazilian grooves. Her band, the Elsa Nilsson Quartet are an improvisational groove quartet playing Deathjazz like Vikings who got sick of the cold and fled to Brazil.

Since moving to Seattle from Sweden in 2005, Nilsson has played with Jim Knapp's bigband, Jovino Santos Neto, Ben Thomas, Chuck Deardorf, Dawn Clement and many more.

In her playing Nilsson seeks to take the flute out of its comfort zones, using extended technique in improvisation and creating sounds that do not normally come out of this classical instrument.

Emily Wells with Anomie Belle

Genre: Classical , Hip Hop , Pop , Rock

Emily Wells:

I love rap music and Vivaldi. Nina Simone and Biggie Smalls make my world go round. The first record i really, you know, heard, in headphones, was Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence". I play the violin and have since i was a little kid. Growing up, my home was filled with music. There was a lot of singing, french horn playing, and symphony listening, plus youth orchestras, church choirs and xylophones, I use to listen to the classic rock station in a three up front car with my two best friends, the windows cracked and the Indiana winter creeping in. I was born in Texas.

I love the studio, it could very well be my favorite place, (especially when it's raining). So I do a lot of live sampling and looping in an attempt to bring the studio to the stage. All the live looping is like a sporting event, or keeping the first take of every recording. I could fall off the balance beam... which makes it all so much more exciting.

As a dirty teen I would sneak into a tiny jazz hole in the wall almost every night and watch the band play. My favorite person there was an old upright bass player with a bushy smile. The women who worked there knew I wasn't of age... They served me coffee while I fell in love with jazz and live performance.

I really like to make beats, sample old records, but I often leave the beats up to my favorite drummer, Sam. Joey is the bass player and together we make a live trio. I started playing with them both a couple of years ago while making my first record "Beautiful Sleepyhead and the Laughing Yaks." Even though I made and released a number of cassette tapes and CDs before that, I call "Sleepyhead" the first because all the others were similar to going to college. Very important, very influential to my future, but mostly, they were about learning. This year I released my latest work, "The Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties", which consists of 10 songs heavily influenced by classical music and hip hop production.

I'm interested in old or odd instruments, samplers and synthesizers, mallets, and analogue reverb. I collect toy pianos, though I only have three. I'm interested in songs, and word play, and sonatas. I'm curious.... Most of all, I'm grateful for every day I get to make music.

Anomie Belle:

Anomie Belle (born Toby Campbell 7 August 1980) is an American musician. Originally a classical violinist and songwriter from Portland, Anomie Belle began performing and recording her own music as a child. She has since worked as a musician and producer in Madrid, Glasgow, Amsterdam, New York, Buenos Aires, and London before moving to Seattle in 2006 to focus exclusively on Anomie Belle. Anomie Belle is also active as a film composer.

Anomie Belle is noted for her provocative vocals and lyrics set to complex, often down-tempo, beats and layers of herself on strings, electric guitars, and synths. Haunting melodies and experimental soundscapes transport listeners through the crowded nature of their modern minds and urban spaces. Her material also grapples with issues ranging from suburban alienation, consumerism, human spirituality and sexuality.

Jason Falkner w/ The 88 & Lincoln Barr & Patrick Porter of Red Jacket Mine

Genre: Pop-Rock , Rock

  1. Monday, September 20 7:30 PM (All ages)

Playing tonight with his full band, one-man pop tour de force Jason Falkner returns with another infectious blast of his signature power-pop. His latest album has just been released, called, I’m Ok, You’re Ok. The 11-track LP, which marks Falkner’s first solo release of original material in more than five years, overflows with the requisite hooks, impeccable arrangements and sticky melodies that have made him a favorite of critics, music lovers and fellow musicians since his early beginnings in the Prince-approved neo-psychedelic band The Three O’Clock and San Francisco psych-poppers Jellyfish.

I’m OK, You’re OK shows Falkner in exceptional form and he readily proves this as the record kicks off with the palpable urgency of “This Time,” a swirling dose of keys and fuzzy guitar coupled with a propulsive beat and Falkner’s soaring vocals. In true Falkner form, his songs bounce from the Brian Eno-esque pop of “Stephanie Tells Me,” to the solemn snythpop of “Hurricane” and the gorgeous, string-filled, acoustic album closer, “This Life Of Mine.” Impressively, aside from the drums on “Runaway,” Falkner played, recorded, produced and mixed every single note on this fourth solo album. And although he chooses to record and perform simply under his full name, the music he creates is far from that of a typical singer/songwriter. His songs are fully loaded compositions complete with layers of guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, strings and of course his rich sweet voice, that deliberately rides the musical scales with ease.

Los Angeles-based Falkner has never been one to be still, and in between his solo projects, he continually outsources his extensive skills. In 2008 he released the second volume of “Bedtime with the Beatles,” his instrumental lullaby renditions of classic Beatle songs, and in 2006, his electro-pop band T.V. Eyes, featuring his former Jellyfish bandmates Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Brian Reitzell of Redd Kross, released their debut LP. In 2001, he contributed to Air’s 10,000 Hz Legend and ultimately spent the next three years touring with them as part of their live band. Last year, Falkner, who has produced albums for Brendan Benson, Magnet as well as all of his own, added several more records to his production resume, serving as producer for Daniel Johnston’s latest LP as well as Dutch artist Anne Soldaat. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Falkner has performed on more than 20 records for artists as varied as Beck, Paul McCartney, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Cheap Trick, Gnarls Barkley, Glen Campbell and Travis just to name a few.

Joe Boyd & Robyn Hitchcock - "Chinese White Bicycles"

Genre: Rock , Singer-songwriter , Special Event

  1. Tuesday, September 28 7:30 PM (All ages)

An incredible collaboration! Joe Boyd is an integral piece of musical history and a great storyteller.

Joe Boyd reads from his book 'White Bicycles' about the musicians he discovered, nurtured and produced in the late 1960s: The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention, Pink Floyd, Nick Drake and others. Robyn Hitchcock, a teenage fan then, plays some of their songs and he asks Joe about them in wide-eyed wonder. Robyn Hitchcock is one of England's most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers, although he's been branded eccentric and quirky during the course of his long career.
